TRANSPORT

MAJOR ROADS
York is served by a number of long distance roads. Major roads include the A64 Leeds to Scarborough road which provides the main links to the motorway system and giving access to the A1 and M1 approximately ten miles from the city. The link with the M62 Transpennine motorway is less than twenty miles from York. Other major routes include the A19 Doncaster to Tyneside road, the A59 Liverpool to York, and the A1079 York to Hull road. The city itself is encompassed by an outer ring road approximately three miles from the city centre. and this enables through traffic to by-pass the city. York city centre street plans date back to medieval times and many routes are unsuitable for modern day traffic. There are areas within the city centre that are car free or restrict traffic completely. To assist the flow of traffic throughout the city there are five bus based park and ride sites operating.

TRAINS
York railway station is one of the most major railway stations on British railway network being approximately halfway between Edinburgh and London Kings Cross. It is a short distance from where the Cross Country and Trans-Pennine routes via Leeds leave the ECML. The junction was historically a major junction for the manufacture of rolling stock and maintenance and repair.

The station is operated by East Coast and is used by the following train operating companies:

East Coast provides the majority of services to London and Northbound trains to Newcastle, Glasgow and Edinburgh

CrossCountry services run across the country, running as far North as Aberdeen and in the South to Penzance and Southampton Central

East Midlands Trains provide one weekend return journey between York and London St Pancras via the Midland Mainline, as well as one summertime Saturday journey to and from Scarborough

First TransPennine Express provides a number of express services Westbound from York to Liverpool and Northbound from Scarborough to Newcastle.

Grand Central runs an open access service between Sunderland and London.

Northern Rail provides a number of commuter services.

BUSES
The main bus company is First York and they operate the majority of local bus services in addition to the York park and ride services. Transdev York operate a number of local bus services. Open top tourist sightseeing hop-on-hop-off buses are operated by City Sightseeing.
Rural services within the York are provided by a number of companies with Transdev York, EYMS, Reliance & Stephensons of Easingwold being major operators. Longer distance bus services are provided by a number of operators including, Arriva, East Yorkshire Motor Services, Harrogate & District Services and Yorkshire Coastliner.

RIVER CRUISES
YorkBoat offer a number of river cruises from their bases at Lendal Bridge and Kings Staith. You can have a sixty minute cruise down the river or you can hire a small boat for six people for an hour. There are cruises to outside the city centre and there are evening cruises with meals provided from April to September.

CYCLING
York is regarded as one of the UK's renowned cycling cities. It has an extensive network of off-road cycle paths and on-road cycle lanes for cyclists of all ages and abilities. There is extensive cycle parking provided throughout the city and in the pedestrianised city centre there are spaces for cycles. Cycles can be rented from a number of establishments within the city centre and organized cycle holidays are available.

PARK AND RIDE
There five Park & Ride bus sites can be found at Askham Bar, Designer Outlet, Grimston Bar, Monks Cross and Rawcliffe Bar. The buses allow you to travel to York by car, park for free in a secure car park and complete your journey into the city centre by bus. All buses are frequent, low-floor and wheelchair accessible. The fare is currently £2.60 per adult return with discounts for regular users.
